What this archive is
Umm Kulthum — The Archive is an independent digital museum devoted to the singer Cairo named Kawkab al-Sharq, the Star of the East. It is affiliated with no record label, broadcaster, or estate. Its rooms hold annotated song pages, original English translations and transliterations, essays on meaning and craft, portraits of the poets and composers who wrote for her, a wiki of longer articles, and a photographic portrait hall.
The museum is built to be walked in two directions. Every page exists in Arabic and in English, right-to-left and left-to-right, and neither language is a translation of convenience: each is written to be read on its own.
Editorial & sourcing policy
Song lyrics on this site are owner-supplied. The archive’s editors publish Arabic texts only from material they hold the right to publish; nothing is copied from lyrics sites or scraped from the web. Where a text has not yet been supplied, the page says so plainly with a marked placeholder rather than an unlicensed substitute.
Translations, transliterations, annotations, essays, and biographies are original work produced for this archive. Historical claims are checked against published scholarship before they appear on a wall label. Corrections are welcome: if you find an error of fact, dating, or transliteration, write to the editors and the page will be reviewed and amended.
Image licensing
Every photograph in the collection is tracked in a manifest that records — alongside its caption, era, and alt text — the license under which it is displayed (the image_license field). The prints currently hanging are generated placeholders that require no rights; they will be replaced only by photographs whose licenses have been verified and recorded. No image hangs on these walls without a license entry.
